Here are my answers to the 20 travel questions I am asked most frequently… hopefully they will inspire you to think about your own favourite travel memories as well as providing a few ideas for future trips!
Where was your first trip abroad?
When I was about 9 I went to Holland by coach, with my family and a big group of friends.
Which country would you most like to visit?
Argentina – there is so much diversity: from buzzing Buenos Aires to the seemingly never-ending pampas…
What is your favourite cuisine?
Mexican – I love all that hot chilli!
What is your favourite travel memory?
There have been so many but if I had to pick one it would have to be canoeing down the Amazon and spotting a pink river dolphin… or maybe it was watching the sunset over Rio from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain… or maybe visiting Palenque first thing in the morning before the crowds descended and while the mist still hung over the forest and the ruins… It’s SO difficult to choose just one!
How do you relax when travelling?
With a glass of wine and a book (the same as at home really, just in a different location!).
What are your hobbies and do you do them on holiday?
Writing and running (though not at the same time, obviously!) – and yes, as they are both hobbies you can do absolutely anywhere! I always pack my running kit when I’m travelling…
Do you speak any languages other than English?
I speak Spanish pretty well and a bit of French and Portuguese too. I always like to try and learn a few basic words/phrases before I go anywhere – it looks like you have made an effort and is always appreciated!
Where is your favourite destination so far?
Mexico – I love it, there are so many fascinating things to see: from the ruins of ancient civilizations deep in the forests to the stunning beaches and vibrant cities.
Do you prefer a relaxing beach holiday or an exploring/adventure holiday?
I like to be active on holiday and see everything there is to see (much to my daughter’s annoyance) so it would definitely be an exploring/adventure holiday. I do like to spend a bit of time relaxing but I’m just not very good at it!!
Who’s your favourite travel writer?
Michael Palin – he’s written some great books about the exciting trips he’s done.
Which is your favourite airport?
I love Dubai – it doesn’t feel like an airport, it’s more like an upmarket shopping mall.
Where has been your most unusual overnight stay?
We spent a night in the chief engineer’s cabin on a retired icebreaker ship, the CCGS Alexander Henry, in Kingston, Ontario, whilst doing a road trip across eastern Canada… that was definitely different!
Which is your favourite museum?
The British Museum in London – it’s amazing.
What’s your favourite park?
Central Park, New York… there is so much to see and do in this green oasis surrounded by shimmering skyscrapers.
What’s your favourite cocktail?
I love an expresso martini after a meal but if I’m just having cocktails I like a refreshing mojito!
What has been your favourite view from a hotel room?
I loved the view over the Arabian Gulf from the balcony of our (huge) room at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai.
Which is your favourite island?
I love Ibiza… beautiful beaches, fantastic accommodation and a laid-back, chilled out vibe.
What is your favourite city?
It would have to be New York. I went for the first time a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. There are just so many fabulous things to do and it is so friendly for a big city.
What is the one thing you would never travel without?
My iPhone! It keeps me in touch and is also my camera and provides me with music wherever I am.
