A Postcard From… the World Para Athletics Championships, London 2017

We booked tickets what seemed like forever ago but before we knew it we were heading to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to watch the World Para Athletics Championships

We drove to London on Sunday lunchtime and parked at Westfield Shopping Centre (which has plenty of parking) as there is no parking at the stadium.  We spent an hour or two wandering round the shops and having lunch at Pizza Express (very busy) before heading over to the stadium.  People were streaming in and the anticipation and excitement were palpable.

The London 2017 Shop had some great stuff and we left with a Whizzbee (mascot) soft toy, a bag, a notebook and a keyring for Freya…

We grabbed a bag of pick and mix (how much??) before heading in and taking our seats.  The stadium is very impressive and, unusually, the plastic seats were reasonably comfortable and there was plenty of legroom!! We had a fantastic view of everything from our seats and the atmosphere was amazing right from the start… let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a Mexican wave!!

We got to watch plenty of different sports: shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, as well as lots of track events.

As we had not watched any live athletics before, it took a little while to get used to the fact that there was more than one event happening at once!  There was so much going on I didn’t know which way to look…

There were some fantastic performances on the night, not least by London 2012 star, Jonnie Peacock who, as expected, won the T44 100m in front of an adoring crowd!  Other than that, I really enjoyed watching the high jump and the visually impaired running events (I’m a registered guide runner myself so found it interesting to watch the professionals in action!).

To sum up, this was a great night of athletics in a world class venue… we will definitely be buying tickets for more sessions next time!
