Just for a change from my normal travel posts, I thought I would do some blog posts looking at some fun summer activities to try out… starting with stand up paddle boarding (SUP). If you’ve never tried stand up paddle boarding you really should… it’s great fun and pretty easy to get the hang of (unlike some other watersports such as windsurfing and kayaking which require a lot more skill!)!
I first tried SUP on the beautiful waterspouts Lagoon at Club La Santa in Lanzarote (find out more about our trip here: An Active Week at Club La Santa, Lanzarote). I was initially a bit sceptical as my balance is not that great so I wasn’t sure how well I’d get on! But the boards are wide and they are generally used on relatively calm waters (lagoons, lakes, rivers) so, unlike surfing, you are unlikely to come off… unless you are messing around of course!
To my surprise, it wasn’t as difficult as I though it would be… no instruction was provided, so you just grabbed a board and a paddle (make sure you get the right length!) and off you went. It was a beautiful, sunny day but the water was not particularly warm so I was a little reluctant to let myself fall in!
The only slightly tricky bit I found was that the wind – which is seemingly ever-present in the Canary Islands – meant that there was a strong current in the Lagoon which pulled you towards one end, so it was hard work getting back to the other end to take the board back when you’d finished! So just remember that there may still be a current and you can get dragged along even on inland waterways. It’s also worth noting that this is probably not the sport for you if you can’t swim at all… In the UK you will be provided with a life jacket of some sort so you should be ok even if you are not a good swimmer but overseas this may not be the case (we weren’t offered life jackets in Lanzarote although you had to confirm that you could swim before you could take one out)!
If you’ve never tried stand up paddle boarding, get out there and give it a go – there are so many places now offering them for hire and it’s such a fun thing to do on a hot day!
